What is fantasy football? Passionate player talks strategy

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) As football players take the field across the nation, many at home make their own picks for the fantasy football season.

In fantasy football, participants act as team owners and draft real-life NFL players to earn points based on those players’ real-life performance each week. They join a league of at least four players, and each fantasy team faces off against another every week. Whichever team has the most points that week wins the matchup.

Learning how to play fantasy football is easy for any football fan, but winning a championship requires some finesse—and many players, like Eagles/Charges fan Zack Schaefer, are passionate about their strategies:

“So this year we’re going with a running back strategy. We are going rounds one and two. We’re getting a running back unless we can go get one of, you know, Ja’Marr Chase, Amon-Ra St. Brown, maybe Puka. Going running back in the first, running back in the second.

Go get some value at wide receiver, rounds three, four, maybe five.

QB: It depends who’s there. You’ve got some great value later in the draft for quarterbacks, so much value there.

Tight ends: If you can get a Brock Bowers or Trey McBride in the second or third, perfect. Otherwise, punt on tight end; go in the later rounds.

Defenses? Who needs them? Just take whatever is a weekly streamer.

Kickers? Why are you playing with kickers? You don’t get to have a kicker in your league; have a super flex league, be better. And yeah, honestly, you want to go for just value at this point. Shoot for upside; don’t shoot for safe bets. Play it risky.”

Beyond the strategy, fantasy football is a reason for passionate fans to feel more invested in the performance of their favorite teams and players.

“Man, I mean, in any draft I’m doing: Ladd McConkey or Omarion Hampton. I love my Chargers; I love my Birds. But Ladd McConkey, Omarion Hampton, and a Mike McDaniel offense. My god, you should be streaming these guys 24/7 if you can get them.”
