Charleston, WV (WOAY)- Attorney General JB McCuskey has announced a historic $7.4 billion nationwide settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family.
The lawsuit is now joined by all 55 attorneys general from across the U.S. and its territories.
The agreement aims to resolve years of litigation over Purdue and the Sacklers’ role in fueling the opioid crisis.
McCuskey says the Sacklers “aggressively marketed their drugs to communities like ours, without a care in the world,” and this deal finally holds them accountable.
As part of the settlement, the Sacklers will exit Purdue and lose the right to sell opioids in the U.S.
Communities nationwide will receive direct funding over a 15-year period for addiction treatment and recovery.
West Virginia will receive up to $53 million on an accelerated nine-year schedule due to the crisis’s disproportionate impact on the state.
The deal now moves to local governments and bankruptcy court for final approval.
Including this agreement, West Virginia has secured over $1 billion in opioid-related settlements and judgments.
