West Virginia (WOAY)-This week is Severe-Weather Awareness week in West Virginia.
The annual event presents an excellent opportunity to create a safety plan for a severe weather emergency.
In anticipation of the spring severe weather season, West Virginia will have a statewide tornado drill at 11:00 am today.
In the event of a tornado, the National Weather Service advises residents to stay tuned to their local weather station for updates.
If you are home, get to a basement, safe room, or interior room away from windows.
If you are at your workplace or school, follow the facility’s safety plan, get to your designated shelter quickly and calmly, and avoid large open rooms such as gyms or auditoriums.
If you’re outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building immediately.
If you’re in a vehicle and unable to get to the nearest shelter, either get down in your car and cover your head or get out of the car and take shelter in a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine.
If you participate in the statewide tornado drill or any other weather awareness week activity, let the National Weather Service know by including #readywvwx in your social media post.
