West Virginia National Guard members arrive in Washington D.C. for duty

Washington, D.C. (WOAY) Members of The West Virginia National Guard have arrived in Washington, D.C. after receiving orders from Governor Patrick Morrisey.

West Virginia service members will be working to support President Donald Trump’s “Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.”

According to President Trump, the city’s high crime rates are the reason for this action. Six states have now sent National Guard troops to help provide increased law enforcement in the nation’s capital.

Governor Morrisey has deployed up to 400 West Virginia National Guard members to serve in D.C. for up to 30 days. The soldiers received their “orientation brief” yesterday.

“West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation’s capital,” said Morrisey. “The men and women of our National Guard represent the best of our state, and this mission reflects our shared commitment to a strong and secure America.”

According to a media advisory released over the weekend, Governor Morrisey says the WVNG involvement will include “providing mission-essential equipment” and “specialized training.”
