Charleston, WV (WOAY) West Virginia is joining the U.S. Election Assistance Commission in recognizing August 11 as National Poll Worker Recruitment Day.
Secretary of State Kris Warner says serving as a poll worker is one way to get a firsthand look at how elections are conducted, while helping strengthen civic engagement and free and fair elections.
For the first time, West Virginia high school juniors and seniors in good standing can serve as poll workers under House Bill 4865.
Students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, receive written consent from a parent or guardian, and complete required election training.
West Virginia has more than 1,600 voting precincts and needs more than 8,400 trained poll workers on Election Day.
