West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection now accepting registrations for 2026 Vernal Pool Monitoring Workshops

West Virginia (WOAY) The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is accepting registrations for the 2026 Vernal Pool Monitoring Workshops starting in February.

The workshops allow participants to be part of a statewide network working to identify and monitor vernal pools.

Vernal pools are shallow seasonal wetlands that fill with rain and snowmelt waters in spring or fall.

They typically dry out by late summer and provide a safe breeding habitat for invertebrates such as shrimp and amphibians like salamanders.

Attendees can expect presentations on vernal pool science topics and a visit to a vernal pool to demonstrate the citizen science monitoring protocol.
