West Virginia Department of Agriculture confirms positive case of bird flu in Kanawha County flock

Charleston, WV (WOAY) The West Virginia Department of Agriculture has confirmed a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a backyard flock in Kanawha County.

Officials say this marks the sixth detection in domestic backyard birds in the state since 2022.

The case was confirmed following testing at the state’s animal health lab, and the affected property has been quarantined.

Agriculture Commissioner Kent Leonhardt says the case is a reminder that all poultry owners should remain vigilant, regardless of flock size.

Avian influenza spreads through respiratory droplets, contaminated surfaces, and contact with wild birds, particularly migratory waterfowl.

State officials say the risk to the public remains low, and properly cooked poultry and eggs are safe to eat.

Poultry owners are encouraged to take precautions, including keeping birds enclosed, limiting contact with wildlife, and disinfecting equipment.

Anyone noticing sudden illness or death in birds should contact the state’s Animal Health Division.
