West Virginia Department of Agriculture confirms positive avian flu case in backyard flock in Greenbrier County

Greenbrier County, WV (WOAY) The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) has confirmed a positive case in a backyard flock in Greenbrier County.

This is the fourth recorded positive case in West Virginia since the global outbreak started in early 2022.

A field investigation, sample collection, and testing at the WVDA’s animal health lab confirmed the diagnosis.

The impacted flock is now under quarantine to prevent further infection and protect the safety of the commercial food supply.

The WVDA has informed industry partners and state health officials and will continue following established response protocols to help decrease the risk of additional spread.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is an airborne respiratory virus that spreads through respiratory secretions, manure, and contaminated surfaces.

Wild migratory waterfowl serve as natural carriers, putting outdoor and backyard flocks at increased risk.

While HPAI impacts some mammal species, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the public health risk remains low.

To prevent the spread of HPAI, WVDA urges poultry owners to keep backyard flocks enclosed or under cover to prevent contact with wild birds.

Officials also recommend removing or securing outdoor feed that may attract wildlife.

Poultry owners should also limit and record the movement of people, vehicles, and animals on the property.

Restricting access to essential personnel only and avoiding visiting other poultry operations or mixing birds from different locations also helps stop the spread.

Prioritize disinfecting equipment, footwear, and tools after contact with birds, and isolate any ill animals and contact a veterinarian for treatment immediately.

Poultry owners should report unusual death loss, a sudden drop in egg production, or any sick domestic birds to the WVDA Animal Health Division at 304-558-2214.
