Weekend outlook: warm with showers and storms

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – The work week ended with more heat and humidity around the area. For the third consecutive day, Beckley reached 90 degrees and the city was not alone, Lewisburg was also able to reach 90 degrees today and like in Beckley, has topped out in the 90s all three days this month so far. Even Bluefield was able to reach 90 degrees today – the first time this year that the city has reached that lofty level. Tonight, will also be similar in terms of the temperatures, we’ll drop into the upper 60s and lower 70s.

The first half of the holiday weekend will see the arrival of showers and storms as a front will approach from the northwest. The chance for rain is not high, but any showers and storms that develop could become strong.

It’s similar to what we saw tonight, but there will be more showers and storms like the one that developed over Pocahontas County this evening, strengthened quickly, and then collapsed almost as quickly. If any of the storms do become severe, damaging winds are the main threat in addition to the possibility for flooding underneath these storms if one of them pops up. The storms will not be fast movers and have plenty of moisture to work with.

Outdoor plans tomorrow should be fine weather-wise, but be prepared to move indoors if necessary. Lows tomorrow night will be in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees again.

The second half of the holiday weekend will be wetter than the first half, as the front gets close enough to increase the chance for showers and storms. Outdoor plans on Sunday will be more prone to rain delays and wash outs. Once again, some of the storms could be on the strong side, and the threats are the same.

With the extra cloud cover, highs are not quite as hot but will still be a few degrees above normal in the middle to upper 80s.
