Weekend outlook and beyond, a mixed bag ahead

It has been a very nice week in southern West Virginia. Except for a few sprinkles and light showers last night, it has been dry all week long. Temperatures have been on the cool side in the morning, with lows in the upper 40s for several days running and in the lower 50s on the other days. Highs have been in the upper 60s and lower 70s; each day has generally been around 10 degrees below the normal.
As we go through the weekend, we’ll see similar conditions around the area. Highs will be in the lower to middle 70s almost everywhere, and lows will be in the lower to middle 50s. Saturday will feature nice weather, with a mix of sun and clouds. It should be good weather for WVU’s home opener against Robert Morris.
Sunday, on the other hand, will see some showers and storms. The bulk of the rain will be in the Greenbrier Valley and southern coalfields as the triggering mechanism is a northeasterly flow, and the uplift provided by the mountains helps to produce some showers and storms.
Our Labor Day holiday will feature a small chance for showers and storms once again in the southern coalfields as a similar upsloping regime to what we’ll see on Sunday develops along and to the west of the peak of the Blue Ridge. Other areas should stay dry. Temperatures on Labor Day should be similar to what they’ll be during the traditional weekend.
As many of us go back to work on Tuesday, another cool front will approach from the west. The chance for showers and storms returns on an area-wide basis and lasts for a couple of days. Behind the front is some very cold air, but the coldest air should stay to our west.
