It is a cloudy day around much of the region, with some showers showing up in some areas, especially in the Greenbrier Valley and southern coalfields. The heavy stuff is well off to our south, but a rumble of thunder might still be heard in some areas before the rain tapers off later on tonight.
Patchy fog is affecting the area this afternoon as some upsloping is allowing for clouds to form in the highest elevations. The fog is cutting down the visibility quite a bit in some areas. It will be a cautious travel night for us around the area.
As we start the weekend, temperatures will be below the normal, much different than what we’ve seen in recent weeks. Thanks to the front, we’ve seen much cooler air invade the region, and it is much cooler now than it was 24 hours ago.
Most areas will be in the lower 60s, with some upper 50s in some of the usual colder spots. Highs tomorrow will be in the mid-70s, also below the normal for the second day of August. There will also be some showers around, mainly in the southern coalfields once again. The temperature and precipitation trends will continue into Sunday as well.
As we start the next work week, we’ll see very pleasant weather on Monday. Another storm system approaches on Tuesday, and the chance for showers and storms is back in the forecast. Highs will also be going up a shade, with the typically warmer areas getting back into the lower 80s and others seeing highs near 80. Overall, it will be seasonable to end the extended forecast.
Looking back at July: The Heat Was On
Now that August is here, we can close the book on July in terms of the temperatures around the region. Here is a look at the month that was high temperature-wise in Beckley.
As you can see, it was a hot one around the region, including in Beckley. Of the 31 days in the month, only two were not above the normal. Several days saw highs more than five degrees above the normal. Overall, when the lows are factored in, the airport was 3.8 degrees above the normal. Other areas around the region were also warmer than they should have been. Bluefield was on average 3.2 degrees above the normal for the month. The warmest high temperature in Beckley was 88 degrees, set on five different occasions. Even the coolest high temperature was only one degree below the normal. Bluefield’s highest temperature during the month was 86 degrees on the 7th.
