PAX, WV (WOAY) – Yesterday’s flooding event has now been classified as deadly, after Fayette County Sheriff Jess McMullen confirmed that a woman was swept away in Pax.A woman died after being swept away by floodwaters in the Pax area during Friday’s flooding event.
According to a press release, the victim made a wrong turn and drove into rapidly rising floodwaters. As the vehicle was pulled away by the current, a tree branch broke the glass, and the victim was carried away as she tried to escape.
Pax Volunteer Fire Department, Fayette County Swift Water Rescue, Oak Hill Volunteer Fire Department, and the Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department assisted the sheriff’s department with a search and rescue operation. She was eventually found by a drone unit this morning.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with this woman’s family during this extremely difficult time. This is a tragic reminder of how quickly flood waters can become deadly. If you encounter water covering a roadway, do not attempt to drive through it. Turn around and find another route. The water may be deeper, faster and more dangerous than it appears,” McMullen said.
