Wayne Ryan appointed to lead W.Va. Secondary School Activities Commission

Parkersburg, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission has a new executive director.

According to a media release from the WVSSAC, Wayne Ryan takes over the executive director position following the retirement of current Executive Director David Price. Ryan previously served as assistant director from 2016 to 2023 and spending more than a year as the associate executive director.

“I appreciate the board of directors’ confidence in me,” Ryan said. “It is an honor to serve in this position, and I am humbled by this opportunity. I am looking forward to working with the board and all stakeholders to continue to serve our student-athletes and our member schools. Our staff will work very hard to better serve and support our member schools and help advance the mission of education-based athletics.”

Prior to his role at the WVSSAC, Ryan spent three decades in Summers County teaching special education, physical education and social studies before moving into administration, working as an assistant principal and athletic director at Summers County High School.

Ryan won West Virginia Coach of the Year and Athletic Director of the Year awards and coached the Summers County girls’ basketball team to six title matches, including five consecutive Class AA state championships.

Ryan will take over as the WVSSAC’s executive director on July 1
