Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – A Wayne County man has pleaded guilty to a fatal hit-and-run accident on the West Virginia Turnpike last year.
Anthony Hay admitted that he struck the victim, Jack Walter of North Carolina, and left the scene of the accident.
Walter was stranded on the shoulder of the turnpike after his car was disabled.
Investigators were able to use video from toll booth cameras and dash camera video submitted by commercial vehicles to identify the box truck Hay was driving.
They traced that truck back to the company that owned it. A manager told police that the vehicle needed body damage repair, and that Hay had claimed he hit a deer.
Police obtained dash camera video from the truck, which showed Hay letting the truck drift over onto the shoulder and hitting Walter.
The video also showed Hay repeatedly drifting, which made police believe he was driving distracted.
