Visit Southern West Virginia recognizes Bill Withers

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – Beckley is gearing up to bestow an unforgettable honor upon one of its own.

The City of Champions announced that a bronze statue of music legend Bill Withers will be unveiled at Bill Withers Plaza atop Beckley Intermodal Gateway on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Withers’ indelible music legacy can still be felt and he is recognized as one of the Mountain State’s most prolific songwriters.

After a stint in the Navy, in 1971, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer released his debut album with Ain’t No Sunshine.

Lean on Me, Lovely Day and Just the Two of Us showcased his soulful bluesy voice.

Visit Southern West Virginia has been doing its part to secure last-minute event details.

“We’re excited to be there and welcome Bill’s family, his fans and his friends. This is going to be an interesting, unique opportunity for our locals and tourism guests to honor him and his work,” said Director Lisa Strader.

“We’re so proud he is from West Virginia, particularly Southern West Virginia and the Beckley-Raleigh County area, and for our office to have contributed in a small way.”
