Vehicle fire at gas pumps, officials remind community how to stay safe

Bluefield, VA (WOAY) – Tuesday evening, the Bluefield, Virginia Fire Department were dispatched to a vehicle fire at the hometown Shell on College Ave in Bluefield, Virginia.

When the fire department arrived, they saw a vehicle parked by the gas pumps on fire.

Both the Bluefield, Virginia, and West Virginia Fire Departments battled the blaze, and it was eventually extinguished.

Jarried McFarland, the public information officer with the Bluefield, Virginia, Fire Department, said that if it weren’t for the quick thinking of the store employees, things could have gotten out of hand. They followed their procedure to the letter in that emergency.

McFarland also told Newswatch that customers need to pay attention to the warning signs on the gas pumps. Customers should not be smoking, using their cell phones or leaving their car running while pumping gas.

Also, if a fire does start inside the tank of your car, do not pull the nozzle out of the opening. Leave it there and let the employees know so they can begin safety protocols.
