LEWISBURG, WV (WOAY) – A new agreement between Vandalia Health and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, plus $4 million from the Rural Health Transformation Program, will reopen labor and delivery services at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.
According to Gov. Patrick Morrisey, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine will be the primary academic affiliation with Vandalia Health with a goal of expanding clinical training and helping recruit and retain physicians.
Meanwhile, the $4 million from the federal government will support a community-based birthing center and assist with complex pregnancies.
Morrisey said it’s a step toward further improving health care access in the region.
“Instead of possibly struggling to recruit physicians from somewhere else, we can first train more of them here and give them a reason to stay,” Morrisey said. “And as obstetric services return to this area, families will once again have access to hospital-based deliveries as needed, including C-sections, epidurals and care for higher-risk pregnancies”, Morrisey said. “Now, this letter of intent makes clear that this will happen. We have a clear path forward also, not just for restoring services, but for sustaining them over the long run.”
