Beckley, WV (WOAY) – A ceremony to honor miners killed in a 2010 explosion is scheduled for this weekend.
According to a media advisory from the Beckley Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, an Upper Big Branch Mine Remembrance Ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 3:00pm at the Miners Memorial Garden near Shoemaker Square adjacent to the Raleigh County Courthouse on Main St. in downtown Beckley, West Virginia.
The ceremony pays tribute to the 29 coal miners who lost their lives on April 5, 2010, at 3:27 PM when an explosion ripped through Upper Big Branch Mine approximately 1,000 feet underground. This was the deadliest mining disaster in the United States since 1970.
The Upper Big Branch Mine is located in Montcoal, Raleigh County.
