UPDATE: Man charged with murder in connection to fatal Raleigh County house fire

UPDATE (Tuesday, June 9, 2020, at 8:45 am) RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – A man has been arrested and charged with murder after a fatal fire took the life of a woman in Shady Spring.

On Monday, June 8, the Beaver Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 240 Canterbury  Drive, Shady Spring, Raleigh County, West Virginia, for a reported Structure Fire. Upon arrival, firefighters made an interior attack of the fire. During the primary search, the homeowner, Margaret Lilly, was located in the home.

Mrs. Lilly was deceased at the time firefighter located her.

The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office was contacted as well as the West Virginia State Fire Marshal. Through the course of the investigation, evidence was discovered that led investigators to believe Mrs. Lilly was the victim of a homicide. Another person who lived at the residence, Joseph Davis, was unaccounted for, and her vehicle was missing.

Investigators later located her vehicle in Summers County, West Virginia, in possession of Joseph Davis. After a standoff with the West Virginia State Police, Davis was taken into custody.

Additional evidence to support the homicide case was discovered. Davis has been charged with and arrested for felony murder. An arraignment is pending before a Raleigh County Magistrate.

In addition to the aforementioned agencies, the Ghent VFD, Mabscott VFD, Coal City VFD,  WV State Medical Examiner, and Jan Care Ambulance responded to the scene. Members of the WV State  Police Crime Scene Unit assisted in processing both crime scenes.

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – A fatal structure fire is currently under investigation in Shady Spring.

According to dispatch, the call came in at 11:24 am of a fire on Canterbury Drive in Shady Spring. Jan Care Ambulance, Ghent Fire Department, Beaver Fire Department, Coal City Fire Department, Mabscott Fire Department as well as the Fire Marshall’s Office were dispatched. A medical examiner was also called to the scene.
