Two officers sentenced in death of an inmate at Southern Regional Jail

Raleigh County, WV (WOAY) – Two former corrections officers have been sentenced for their role in the deadly assault that led to the death of Quantez Burks.

Mark Holden has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Johnathan Walters was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Both are facing three years of supervised release.

They both pleaded guilty in federal court to violating Burk’s civil rights. Both Holden and other officers beat Burks, kicked him, and pepper-sprayed him while he was handcuffed in an interview room.

Walters helped carry Burks out of the interview room and swung his head into a metal door to open it. Both admitted to knowing that there was no surveillance camera in the interview room.
