It is a fairly nice summer afternoon around the region, with a mix of sun and clouds and seasonably warm temperatures. There are some isolated showers around the region as well; those that have popped up have been confined to the Greenbrier Valley and other areas near the Virginia state line.
They’ll fade after sunset as they are mostly driven by the heating of the day, combined with some uplifting provided by the mountains. Partly cloudy skies should take us through the night, with temperatures dropping into the lower 60s.
Tomorrow will be another mild afternoon, with highs in the mid-80s – a couple of degrees warmer than today. Our Futurecast model wants to place a few showers over the same general areas that are seeing rain this afternoon. I think the chance for rain is very small, as high pressure exerts its influence over our weather. Tomorrow night should be pleasant again, with lows in the mid-60s.
As we go into the middle of the week, chances for showers and storms return to the forecast as a front comes into the area from the northwest. Rain chances will not be all that high (I’m going with 40% chances on both Wednesday and Thursday), any shower or storm that does develop will have heavy rain attached, as the moisture available for the storms to work with is high. The Weather Prediction Center has placed most of the state (except the areas near the Virginia line) in a “Marginal Risk” category for flooding rains, meaning there is a 5% chance of seeing the amount of rain that would cause flash flooding.
After a brief break on Friday, another front approaches the area on Saturday and gives us better chances for showers and storms compared to what we’re expecting during the middle of the week. The net effect of these fronts passing through will be to drop our temperatures a bit late in the forecast period. Highs will be in the upper 70s beginning this weekend and lasting through the end of the forecast.
