Train derailment in Thurmond

Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – A coal train derailed in Thurmond last night right where the tracks cross the road as you come over the bridge in front of the Thurmond depot.

On Tuesday morning, RJ Corman Railroad Company was working to place derailed cars full of coal back onto the tracks.

They are also preparing to replace damaged rails that were mangled when the cars derailed.

There were still visitors coming to see the historic coal and railroad town Tuesday morning. However, vehicular traffic across the bridge was halted. The bridge was open to those willing to walk across.

The National Park Service told Newswatch that it recommends visiting other parts of the park until cleanup in Thurmond is complete.

Woay reached out to Luke Robinson of RJ Corman Railroad Company to find out when they expect to have the repairs complete. WOAY hasn’t received a follow-up, but we will update you should we learn more.
