OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a decent day around the region, with some sunshine mixed in with showers and storms in the southern areas and haze and smoke from the wildfires to our north everywhere. The storms have been moving from west to east, so areas along and north of I-64 didn’t see much at all, with the exception of parts of Greenbrier County. The storms have moved to our east this evening, but many more will follow in their wake tomorrow and Wednesday. Lows tonight will be in the mid-60s again.
Tomorrow, the front that is producing so much rough weather to our northwest will arrive, and it will be our turn to see strong to severe storms. It looks like the strongest storms will occur during the evening, but there will be isolated strong storms during the early afternoon as well.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the northern parts of the area in a rare (for us) Level 3 out of 5 for severe storms from Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning.
All of the threats that they track – damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes – are in play. The main threat is for damaging winds. Some of the storms could see winds gusting to near hurricane force.
In addition, there is also a chance for flash flooding as there is plenty of Gulf moisture for these storms to work with and the storms will dump their rain in a short amount of time.
Highs tomorrow will still be warm, generally in the lower 80s. The amount of sun will determine how warm it gets and will also help to determine how strong the storms wind up getting. The more sunshine, the less stable the atmosphere will be and the stronger the storms could get.
The chance for severe weather lasts through Tuesday night with the same threats possible. By Wednesday morning, the front finally pushes through, and what’s left will mainly be rain, not strong-to-severe storms. Highs on Wednesday will be in the mid-70s.
The longer-range forecast features a brief break from the severe storms along with slightly cooler nights and pleasant days. Rain returns on both weekend days, but the chances of storms and their intensity will be much lower than what we’ll see over the next couple of days. Lows and highs at the end of the forecast will be close to normal.
