Town of Gary to crack down on illegal trash dumping

GARY, WV (WOAY) – In recent years the town has had issues with the illegal dumping of trash and the town’s police force is getting together this Monday with other county enforcement agencies to find those who are responsible.

The town’s police chief S.P. McKinney says that some citizens are even scamming the elderly by offering to haul off their trash, and then just dumping it on the side of the road.

“Taking money to haul off trash, and they haul it up the holler, throw it off the back of the truck on the side of the road. And the Solid Waste Authority finds it, identifies the names that are in the trash bag, and the property owner who tried to do the right thing winds up charged,” McKinney said.

McKinney also said that on Monday instead of giving out citations, which is typical for illegal dumplings, they’ll simply arrest any perpetrators.

The town is also encouraging citizens to take part in free dump day, where the Copper Ridge Landfill allows anyone in the county to dump trash for free on the last Friday of each month.
