Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) The fun of summer break has a way of making the rigid routine of school seem very far away. However, according to Dr. Eric Boose at Cleveland Clinic, a little preparation can go a long way. Here are a few tips to keep in mind leading up to the first day back.
- If summer break has meant later wake-up times, resetting sleep schedules at least one week before school can ensure that students are well-rested.
- If necessary, start a few weeks in advance and ease into an earlier bedtime by 15 minutes every few days.
- With bedtimes in order, start getting them used to the full morning routine a week or so early.
- Include hygiene, breakfast, and packing their things in time for the bus.
- You can also help your child feel supported by helping them get back into learning mode.
- Attending an open house can get them used to the school environment.
- Reviewing any challenging material from last year can give them a head start for the year ahead.
- Encourage reading, such as from a summer reading list or books they are genuinely interested in.
While it’s not necessary to manufacture a whole summer school, making your child feel familiar with the school routine and environment can make the first day back less jarring. Even when things change as school starts again, it will mean a lot to know they’ll always have the same support.
