Thursday, February 6 is National Frozen Yogurt Day

West Virginia (CNN)- It’s only Thursday, but you can start celebrating the weekend early and treat yourself to some frozen yogurt.

Thursday is National Frozen Yogurt Day, observed every year on February 6.

This icy treat started as a fad but has become a freezer-section staple.

According to nationaldaycalendar.com, the dairy company HP Hood created the first frozen yogurt in the US in 1970 and introduced it as a soft-serve dessert called frogurt.

Shortly thereafter, Humphreys and Dannon came out with their versions of frozen yogurt.

Though its health benefits vary compared to ice cream, fro-yo does tend to be lower in fat and calories.

Celebrate with your favorite flavor in a cup or cone.
