Beckley, WV (WOAY) Saturday, September 19th, the third annual Keep Writing Your Story Festival came to Freedom Skate Park in Beckley.
Organizers said the day featured free live music and skating demonstrations and also created a space for community connection, suicide prevention awareness, and recovery outreach.
At noon, spectators watched Air Evac land a helicopter in the Babe Ruth baseball field just behind the skate park.

Amanda Hammons, chair of the Beckley Day Center board of directors, says the event is made possible by multiple community organizations and nonprofits that all come together to foster connection and let people know that their story is not over.
“One of the important things that we do is partner up with BEX, which is Beckley Exhibition Arts, and they give us a lot of paint so that we can do a mural every year based around this. We pull a quote from a person in the community about what ‘Keep Writing Your Story’ means to them, and it just means that it’s never over. It’s never too late. And if you have something to say, it can be heard here.”
Hammons wanted to give special thanks to everyone involved, and especially to the president of the Beckley Babe Ruth League and long-time local sports announcer at WJLS, Maris Lowery.
“A big part of this story again is the Babe Ruth Field with Maris Lowery… If it weren’t for you allowing a baseball field to be used for something so outlandish as landing a helicopter, so many kids would not get inspired by it, and we wouldn’t have that big moving moment. So thank you and happy travels.”
