MERCER COUNTY, WV (WOAY)- Mercer County Animal Shelter is celebrating a major milestone nearly a decade in the making. The shelter is proud to announce it has officially been nationally recognized as a no-kill shelter.
This prestigious honor didn’t come easily. The facility has been working diligently to show that they have continually saved a minimum of 90% of the animals that come into the shelter. Stacey Harman with the shelter explains more about this recognition.
“I’ve been working with an organization called Best Friends. They are a national organization; they’re all over the country. They have a sanctuary out in Utah, and they have representatives in every state. So I joined up with them and they collect our data to determine, how many animals we’re saving a year,” explained Stacey Harman, the Director of Mercer County Animal Shelter. “And this is the first year that we’ve been able to achieve this. And, what it is, is that no kill does not mean that we don’t euthanize. No kill means that we save at least 90% and up. If we have an injured, sick or aggressive dog that comes in, we do have to euthanize. But no kill means that we’re saving at least 90% of our animals that we take in.”
MCAS credits their success in this to the community, rescue partners, volunteers, and sponsors.
Speaking of sponsors, starting on July 3rd, they’ll be hosting a Bissell adoption event for 2 weeks. This will make the fees for dogs just $25 and $10 for cats. The adoption fee will include spaying and neutering, the first round of shots, deworming, and a flea treatment if needed.
