PIPESTEM, WV (WOAY)- 40 targets, 40 arrows, one winner.
The first leg of the International Bowhunters Organization Triple Crown is being hosted at Pipestem Resort State Park. The triple crown is a multipart competition where competitors compete over the summer for national titles.
This competition utilizes 3D archery. 3D archery is where simulated animal targets are placed around the course at an unknown distance from competitors.
“It’s important to have an unknown distance because they have two skills involved. Number one, shooting their bow. And number two, estimating distance,” explained Bryan Marcum, President and CEO of the International Bowhunters Organization. “That’s what makes 3d archery different than any other target archery game. And it takes two skills to compete in 3d archery.
Competitors range in age, skill level, and bow type, making 35 different classes to compete in. Even southern West Virginia locals compete and are national title winners.
“I don’t I don’t talk about that a lot because there are other people out there who are just as good as I am, if not better. I just had a better weekend [those times],” said Randy Irvine, WV State Representative for IBO, competitor. “I’ve done this since 2005, and I’ve been. I’ve been blessed at each class, MR (modern recurve), Long Bow, and Trad (traditional). Went to various competitions and brought home, some awards and some buckles, and I’m very proud of [that].”
Archery is a sport for anyone of any age. The IBO welcomes anyone to visit and watch throughout the weekend.
