The Great Race made a pit stop in Lewisburg on Friday

LEWISBURG, WV (WOAY)- The multi-state Great Race stopped in downtown for everyone to enjoy!

The Great Race is a traveling antique time speed endurance rally that visits various small towns across the country. This year’s race started in Minnesota and will end in South Carolina, having visited 17 different stops across 9 states.

Lewisburg was their second stop in West Virginia this year as they stopped in Charleston Thursday night. The 125 cars featured in this year’s event were built in 1974 or earlier and some are as old as 110 years old.

So what started almost 50 years ago has turned into quite an event for people to see. The announcer at the event explains what his favorite part of the event is every year.

“That’s my favorite part about this event. You know, there are business reasons, and the competitors are doing the event to get out in their old cars, but the best part is being in all of these small towns and spending time with people there,” explained Jason White, an announcer st the Great Race. “It’s a free event, family friendly. You can see and touch the cars, talk to the racers. It’s just really cool to get out and meet people all across the country. I mean, it is the best part about this event every year. The cars are great, but the people are fantastic.”

You can go to their website to see where they’re going next and locations for future races.
