Temps go down; storm chances go up

Temperatures around the area continue to be warm this afternoon, although not quite as warm as it was earlier this week.

But the heat dome continues to be the dominant feature in our weather and temperatures continue to be at least five degrees above the normal on both ends of the scale.

The presence of the high, however, doesn’t stop the possibility for strong to severe storms to develop. If storms are able to get going, they could develop quickly into strong to severe storms. This trend will last for the next few days; here is an example for what we could see with the storms that develop later tonight.

Over the next few days, chances for strong to severe afternoon and evening storms will be in the forecast. While our high-resolution GRAF model sometimes overdoes the intensity of the storms, the bottom line is that there will be scattered storms to deal with.

As we go into the early part of next week, we’ll continue to see chances for storms, but the temperatures will go down a bit as the heat dome breaks down a bit. With highs in the lower 80s, it will be close to the normal, more of a typical summertime pattern.
