Tazewell, VA (WOAY)- Tazewell Police Department Officials are warning residents about a rise in Appalachian Electric Power (AEP) imposter scams.
Scammers are posing as Appalachian Power representatives, using threats of immediate disconnection to pressure victims into making quick payments or divulging personal information.
Be on the lookout for red flags, such as demands for prepaid cards, wire transfers, or even cryptocurrency; requests for sensitive information, like your Social Security number or bank account details; and high-pressure tactics, like rushing you into a payment decision.
AEP employees will NEVER demand immediate payment at your home, and they will always carry proper ID.
If something feels off, hang up, delete the email, or close the door, then call Appalachian Power at 1-800-956-4237 to verify.
If you’ve been targeted, contact the Tazewell Police Department right away.
