Tazewell County seeks answers following misclassification on federal sanctuary jurisdictions list

Tazewell, VA (WOAY) – Tazewell County officials are seeking answers after discovering that the county was inaccurately included on a list of sanctuary jurisdictions.

The jurisdictions were published under Executive Order 14287.

President Trump signed the legislation in April.

The executive order directs the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security to publish a list of states and local jurisdictions that “obstruct the enforcement of Federal immigration laws.”

Additionally, it allows them to pursue all necessary legal remedies and enforcement measures to bring non-compliant jurisdictions into compliance.

The order also calls on the heads of departments and agencies to identify federal funds, including grants and contracts, that can be suspended or terminated to sanctuary jurisdictions as a consequence of their status.

Officials state the designation does not reflect the county’s approach to public safety or immigration enforcement.

County Administrator Eric Young states that the county is in the process of contacting the relevant federal offices to request clarification.
