Tazewell County Public Schools announces new clear backpack policy taking effect this August

Tazewell, VA (WOAY) Tazewell County Public Schools is announcing a new policy taking effect this fall to enhance campus safety.

School officials are implementing a clear backpack policy for PK-12 students at school and school-sponsored events starting this August.

All student backpacks must be clear and transparent with see-through compartments and pockets allowing staff and faculty to view what is inside.

Clear backpacks must be made of plastic or PVC material.

Mesh, tinted, solid-colored, or partially covered backpacks are not allowed.

Students must use clear backpacks to carry textbooks, school-issued devices, personal items, and school supplies.

Officials say that students may carry a small non-clear pouch inside their clear backpack for personal hygiene items and small valuables.

Pouches must be no larger than 5″ x 8″ and are subject to inspection if necessary.

Sports bags, band instrument cases, or other specialized equipment bags are allowed under the supervision of a coach or sponsor.

Equipment bags must be stored in designated areas, such as a locker or classroom, immediately upon arrival.

School personnel and security staff will check to ensure students comply with the policy as they arrive on campus.

Students found in violation will be required to return their backpacks to their vehicle or have a parent or guardian pick them up for them.

School officials say that repeat violations may result in progressive disciplinary action in accordance with the TCPS Student Code of Conduct.

There are exceptions for students with documented medical needs who require a non-clear backpack or medical bag.

Students must submit appropriate documentation to the school nurse or administration for review and approval to receive an exception.

Exceptions may also be granted for students who have an approved 504 Plan or IEP that specifies alternate requirements.
