Summersville welcomes Brad Reed as new top cop

NICHOLAS COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – New Summersville Chief of Police Brad Reed has a storied law enforcement career.

He was a West Virginia state trooper for 23 years, five years with the Montgomery Police, and the Marshall University P.D.

Reed says he has big shoes to fill.

“I’m trying to get my bearings and acclimated to the surroundings,” Reed said. “I want to see (the department) going forward. We need to work more on the mental health of the Summersville people.”

According to the new chief, there’s a good support system that helps them with the homeless population.

“I want to make sure we’re up-to-date on our training, and that we know we’re training for the future,” said Reed, of any new legislation.”

His priority is also having his officers interact with the community more.

“The most rewarding part of the job is meeting and helping people,” the chief of police said. ‘I was stationed up here for about ten years, and once had a problem with a house fire. The public surrounded me with help, and I want to give back.”
