WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): The morning has started decently enough, but some showers will be moving in for the second half of the morning. These showers will be on the weaker side, so an umbrella should be sufficient for any morning errands. However, that will not be the case this afternoon. There will be a brief break in the weather early in the afternoon, giving the atmosphere a modest amount of juice to work with later. Thunderstorms will develop and roll through starting around 2 PM, and a few storms could be strong or severe. Damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour will be the main concern within any severe storms. An isolated bout of medium-sized hail cannot be ruled out either, as strong updrafts are possible within these storms. Tornadic activity is very unlikely this afternoon.
The window for severe weather is short today, lasting from this afternoon until around 7 PM this evening. After that point, storms will weaken as the sun sets, leaving us with only weaker storms and showers overnight. Even with the shorter window of opportunity for these storms, it is important to stay weather-aware throughout the day. A few lingering showers are possible before sunrise on Thursday, but they will quickly exit the region before the morning commute. After the rain moves on, the rest of the week will be much calmer. Skies will be partly sunny tomorrow before becoming mostly sunny on Friday as high pressure passes through. Our main concern for Thursday and Friday will be overnight temperatures. Conditions will be chilly tonight and tomorrow night, so any sensitive plants should be protected after the cold front moves through. Temperatures will dip into the upper 30s Friday morning, which may prompt the National Weather Service to issue Frost Advisories or Freeze Warnings in our region. After a patchy frost on Friday morning, temperatures will steadily recover through the weekend and next week.
The only deviation in this weekend’s calm forecast, if you can really even call it that, is some showers moving in on Saturday evening. While some people may feel a bit dampened by these showers, we really need the rain anywhere we can get it. These showers and isolated thunderstorms will be light before passing by overnight and leaving us dry on Sunday. Temperatures will reach into the 80s by Sunday. This trend will continue into early next week. In fact, the remainder of May is trending much warmer than the region began the month.
