WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): A few showers and thunderstorms are impacting the southwestern portion of our viewing. This includes Tazewell, McDowell, and Mercer counties. Heavy rain is falling in some areas, but these storms remain weaker. A few more stray thunderstorms will move through before a slight lull in activity sets in. A few scattered storms may develop this afternoon, but not everyone will be affected. The next larger group of storms is not coming through until at least this evening.
Models have been struggling, but a good chunk of them agree on an active pattern overnight. Daytime heating loss will limit storm strength once again, while heavy rain remains a possibility. With the rain we have received over the past few days, flooding concerns remain our main concern through tonight. A Flood Watch remains for Fayette, McDowell, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Raleigh, and Wyoming counties until 8 AM tomorrow morning. Rounds of storms will continue to move through the area on Friday. While there will be peaks in activity, scattered thunderstorms will remain in the forecast for the entire day. The first round is trending to affect the morning commute and early afternoon, while a second may develop during the evening hours. Timing is still not a certainty due to how much models are quarreling over this pattern, but storms are likely to affect the majority of our viewing area.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed a “marginal” severe weather risk over the entire viewing area tomorrow, which means we could see isolated severe thunderstorms. Damaging wind gusts and heavy rain are the main concerns for any stronger storms tomorrow. The flooding risk will rise, mainly in the western half of the region. The day will not resemble Tuesday, but we may experience a couple of warnings throughout the day. It is a good idea to stay aware through the day, even if the storms do not end up impacting you.
Rain chances will fall during the weekend, especially on Sunday. However, the chance for isolated to scattered thunderstorms will not be completely eliminated. Saturday will feature lingering storms with potential to become strong, similar to Friday. A high-pressure system will briefly stop by on Sunday, lowering chances to around 20% through the day. If you are looking for sunshine next week, you will need to wait a bit longer. A cold front pushes through on Monday, bringing back the potential for a few stronger storms and widespread rain.
