Stormy stretch of days across Southern West Virginia

Southern West Virginia is in for a rainy and potentially stormy stretch of weather beginning today, with warm temperatures helping to add some instability to the atmosphere. This afternoon, a few strong to severe storms are expected to develop, where all modes of severe weather will be possible.

According to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), our region is under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather today. Scattered showers and storms will move through the area, and while not all will be severe, some could produce gusty winds, hail, and heavy rainfall. Localized flooding may occur where storms repeatedly pass over the same areas. A tornado cannot be ruled out entirely, though the higher risk for that remains west of our region.

As we head into tomorrow, the severe threat lowers slightly, with our region placed under a Level 1 out of 5 marginal risk. However, with more widespread rain expected, flash flooding could become a bigger concern, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

This active pattern will continue for the next several days, so it’s a good idea to keep rain gear handy and remain weather-aware. Travel plans and outdoor activities may need to be adjusted—especially today and tomorrow.
