The main story of the weekend is obviously Mother’s Day which happens on Sunday. Speaking of Sunday, thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon into the evening hours. The Storm Prediction Center is keeping all of the severe risk well southwest of our area, but a stripe of General Thunderstorm risk does go right through West Virginia.
Diving into graphic 2, futurecast CAPE is basically just showing us if the atmosphere has any energy to get storms going and keep them sustained. There is some signs of enough energy being present in the atmosphere that some thunderstorms are possible, maybe a strong storm or two due to the amount of energy being there that could support some strong wind gusts up to 40 MPH isn’t out of the question.
Looking at the futurecast in graphic 3, you can see that this model does have some pretty strong looking storms on radar in the area Sunday afternoon. This isn’t the only cell as a few hours later it has some more cells popping up across the area through the evening.
Enjoy Mother’s Day, but when thunder roars, go indoors!

We will be dry going from Monday afternoon through Tuesday. More rain looks to come through on Wednesday which could also have some thunderstorms move through the area. Again, we are currently looking at those remaining sub-severe.

Taking a look at the full 7 day forecast, with rain Sunday and Wednesday we look to not have MUCH drought impact. Temperatures will cool down slightly on Monday and Thursday, but we will rise to back near to above average by late week as we remain dry. Some models are showing signs of a system coming through Saturday, but at the moment it’s not enough agreement to put out a rain risk, but that’s something we will continue to watch out for!
