OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It is a much calmer day today across the region, as the front that produced the strong-to-severe storms we saw yesterday is off to our south, still causing some issues in areas along the Virginia/North Carolina state line. Severe storms are still possible in that area, but most of what we see will be below severe limits and will be confined to Tazewell County.
Later tonight, almost all the rain should end, and patchy fog will be left over around the area. Lows, meanwhile, will be in the mid-50s, the coolest readings we’ve seen in a while. It’s not exactly jacket weather, but it will feel nice to be outside tomorrow morning.
As the day goes on tomorrow, highs will climb into the mid-70s. When combined with the morning lows, it will be the nicest day that we’ve seen overall in some time. We’ll keep the nice weather through tomorrow night as well; lows will drop into the upper 50s.
Beginning on Friday, the chance for rain returns to the forecast.
Yesterday’s front will pull up stationary to our south, but a series of disturbances moving along the boundary will serve as the trigger for more showers and storms. Rain chances will be in the 30-40% neighborhood during the Friday through Sunday timeframe. At first, we’ll manage to keep thunder out of the forecast too, but a rumble or two could be heard during the weekend. Overall, any outdoor plans should be fine, but as always during a West Virginia summer, indoor alternatives are a good idea. Highs will rise slightly during this time frame, going from the mid-70s to around 80 degrees on average on Sunday.
Later in the extended forecast, another storm system will march into the region, increasing the rain chances to 50% by the end of the forecast period and possibly triggering more strong showers and storms, something that we’ll be tracking for you as the forecast comes more into focus over the next few days.
Highs will continue the warming trend from the early part of the forecast and will be in the lower 80s.
