Sports journalist and award winning cartoonist Tom Bone III passes away

Athens, WV (WOAY)-Local sports journalist and award-winning cartoonist, Tom Bone III, passed away Monday night, surrounded by family.

According to a post from his daughter, Bone had been admitted to a Virginia hospital just two days earlier due to neurological symptoms.

Bone had been battling cancer, but the symptoms were not related to his diagnosis.

Doctors discovered a brain bleed, a blood clot, and pressure on a major vein, which led to a series of hemorrhages.

Bone was well known as a former sportswriter and cartoonist for the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and Princeton Times.

Later, he became the director of public information at Concord University.

This past summer, Bone was honored by the Bluefield Arts Center gallery for his editorial cartoon artwork, with a gallery displaying his work throughout the years.

A memorial service will be held at Concord United Methodist Church in Athens.

His loved ones will release event details at a later date.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the local community he impacted with his creativity.
