Snow guns blazing – Winterplace kicks off season’s first snowmaking

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – Winterplace is excited to lean into the first 2025 snow, getting in snow-making mode to prepare for the upcoming season.

The resort has the capacity to convert 7,200 gallons of water into snow per minute.

And they couldn’t be happier about completing their recent upgrade — improving the snowmaking system and adding 20 new snow guns to maximize efficiency and slope coverage.

The resort operates 300 snow guns and 12 miles of underground pipe.

“It feels great. The team’s been working hard all summer. We’re wrapping up a $2 million capital project over the last two years. And not only do we get to start making snow today, we’re getting some natural snow, too. So it’s a perfect little kick-off for winter,” said General Manager Josh Faber.

According to Faber, they are aiming toward the first weekend in December to have something open.

“We’re pushing really, really hard right now to get some piles made, and then hopefully that’ll stick around for when we make snow again,” the general manager said, adding that he loves the whole scene.

“In the wintertime, we don’t have a lot of options to do things with our family, like, let’s get our kids off the screens,” said Faber. “Let’s do something active and fun. Skiing and snowboarding, and tubing are the perfect opportunity to do something with the family.”
