Showers and storms arrive, ushering in big changes

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It’s been a transition day today around the region. We started off with very nice weather; there was plenty of sunshine and near-record-high temperatures. Today’s high of 80 at the Raleigh County Memorial Airport was only two degrees shy of the record of 82, which had been set in 1954.
As the day went on, some clouds rolled into the area ahead of the first of two fronts that will bring massive changes to our weather over the next couple of days. Tonight, the storms that have been strong to severe to our west will enter our area. While the chance for flooding rain or damaging winds is small, it is still there, so be sure to stay weather-aware tonight. With the cloud cover and the chance for rain, lows will be much warmer than they should be. We’ll drop into the lower 60s; that’s only a few degrees off of the average high for mid-October!
The chance for rain continues tomorrow as the first of the two fronts pushes through. The showers and storms will continue throughout the day.
Temperatures will still be warm, however, as the front that is producing tonight’s rain will be stationary over the southern part of the state. The rain will come in waves, with chances dropping to around 30%, down from the 60% chance that is in the forecast tomorrow afternoon.
Tomorrow night will be mild again, with lows in the lower 60s.
Friday, the secondary front will swing through, producing a few showers and storms as it does. The winds will pick up as well, with a strong pressure gradient between the low that the aforementioned front is attached to and a very strong high-pressure dome over the Dakotas. At first, the winds will be out of the southwest, but as the front passes through, the winds will shift direction to the northwest at an equally strong clip.
That will allow the coldest air of the season so far to invade the area. Temperatures will fall from the moment that the wind shift happens until Saturday morning; it will be in the upper 30s in most areas!
Saturday is Bridge Day, and layers will be needed for those heading out to the festivities! There could be some precipitation on the back side of the low, and in the highest elevation parts of the state, some of the precipitation will fall in wintry form.
The cold air moderates slightly after a very cold start on Sunday. By the afternoon, it will be warmer than it was on Saturday. By the end of the forecast, temperatures are back to near normal. As for precipitation, dry weather is expected after the late-week fronts are gone.
