Search and rescue operations underway to rescue miner in Nicholas County

Four West Virginia mining companies earned national honors for outstanding achievement in mine safety, reclamation, and technology innovation.

DRENNAN, WV (WOAY) – Multiple state, federal and private agencies are working to rescue a missing miner at Rolling Thunder Mine in Nicholas County.

According to Governor Patrick Morrisey, teams are pumping water out of a flooded mine after an old mine wall failed.

According to WCHS, the flood happened at around 1:30 yesterday. Crews were unaware of the pocket of water until they hit it and the mine flooded.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has granted emergency approval to remove as much water as necessary. The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training and the Mine Safety and Health Safety Administration are on site assisting Alpha Met Resources. The state police and Nicholas County first responders are also helping.

Two dive teams are on site through coordination with the West Virginia Emergency Management Division and the National Cave Rescue Commission.
