San Francisco 49ers to visit Greenbrier this month

WOAY Sports confirmed Wednesday that the San Francisco 49ers will be at the Greenbrier Resort later this month.

In a statement, the Greenbrier Resort said, “Further details will come from the 49ers at a later date, but The Greenbrier is excited about welcoming them to West Virginia and again showcasing our incredible football facility.”

The 49ers will play at the New York Jets on Sunday, September 20, before going back to Metlife Stadium to play the New York Giants the following weekend. Instead of flying back-and-forth from San Francisco, the team will spend the week in West Virginia in between games. The Arizona Cardinals used a similar approach in 2015 when they had consecutive games on the East Coast.

This means the resort will host an NFL franchise for the first time since 2018, when the Houston Texans and New England Patriots visited White Sulphur Springs. The New Orleans Saints held part of their training camp at the resort from 2014-16.

There had been reports in the spring that multiple teams were considering holding part of training camp at the Greenbrier, but the NFL ruled in June that teams must stay in their home markets for preseason activities, with no joint practices allowed.

San Francisco went 13-3 in the 2019 regular season, winning the NFC championship but losing to Kansas City 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV.
