Safety is a year-round treat: Lessons from the Trick-or-Treat trail

SHADY SPRING, WV (WOAY) – With another Halloween season behind us, there are always steps parents can take to ensure their kids’ safe trick-or-treating.

Send them out in a group; there is safety in numbers. Have a pre-planned route and know the neighborhoods they will be visiting.

“Many people take advantage of Trunk or Treat because it’s more of a controlled environment. Parents can accompany their kids to get candy and assess it for themselves,” said Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Lonnie Carper.

It provides more peace of mind about who is handing out sweets.

“I would encourage all parents, before you let your kids eat the candy, inspect it to make sure the wrappers have not been tampered with and everything looks normal,” Carper said.

And pranks often emerge on Halloween.

“TikTok and social media apps have pushed it to the level of becoming criminal,” said Carper. “People need to be very aware. If you have an app like Life360, you can monitor where your kids are.”
