WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Rain will instigate not only flooding but mudslide potential across our region through Friday.
The rain will definitely wash away the salt from your car. Your favorite walking path will finally be free of snow and ice and all that road salt will get washed away by the rain.
Standing water where we’ve had snow melt, such as the road that leads to the Pizza Hut in Oak Hill is one example of many areas that are going to experience flooding going forward through Friday.
The interstitial water between the rocks along cliffs and hillsides has gone through the freeze/thaw cycle many times, left gaps between the rocks that has allowed a few rocks to nudge out of their space and slide into the shoulder of exit and entrance ramps. The additional rain through Friday will open the gaps between the rocks even more and foster a few rockslides.
Additionally, an analog to this month is March of 2015 when there was a foot of snow on the ground at the beginning of the month and then there was some rain towards the middle of the month. The end result was mudslides in the Greenbrier Valley.
Small creeks and streams and even parts of the Greenbrier River will see flooding Friday into Saturday. When you approach a flooded roadway, turn around because the water is usually deeper than what it appears.
