Richlands Police Department teams up with American Red Cross to houses floods evacuees in local hotels

RICHLANDS, VA (WOAY) – Due to flooding and social distancing Richlands Police Department is taking a new approach to how evacuees are sheltering in place.

Chief of Police Jerry Gilbert says the department is working closely with American Red Cross on getting residences a place to stay while keeping everyone apart.

“For the folks that have to evacuate we have been in touch with the American Red Cross and they’re making arrangements through some of the local hotels. Normally we would have a shelter here at the police department or open one at the local schools, but because of the virus and the fact that we’re trying to keep people separated they are working with the local hotels to house people,” said Gilbert.
