Respiratory illness cases are up nationwide this winter season

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY)- The rates of overall respiratory illnesses in the US are currently high across the US. However, experts think that the winter virus season will have similar or lower peak numbers compared to last year.

Recent CDC data shows levels of hospital visits for COVID-19 are actually low and RSV visits at moderate levels, both though are decreasing. Hospital visits for the flu however are very high and increasing.

The CDC says there’s still time to benefit from getting your vaccinations to reduce the risk of getting sick. However,  the agency says the vaccination rates for COVID-19 and the flu are low for both adults and children. RSV vaccinations also remain low for adults.

Experts say many children and adults lack protection from respiratory diseases provided by these vaccines. Health experts will be keeping an eye on all virus activity levels this winter season.
