LEWISBURG, WV (WOAY – Two of West Virginia’s leading Republicans have made competing endorsements in the Republican primary for State Senate District 10.
Governor Patrick Morrisey has endorsed challenger and Lewisburg pastor Jonathan Comer. Senator Shelley Moore Capito endorsed incumbent Vince Deeds.
“Jonathan is authentic, a staunch supporter of our religious liberties, and a big advocate of lowering our taxes. Jonathan is pro-life, pro-gun rights, and pro-jobs. With over 500 members of his church, Jonathan is well known in his district for his integrity. He has a wonderful family, and has worked tirelessly to help his community over the past 25 years. He’s the change agent we need in Charleston to lift our state up and protect our children,” Morrisey said in his endorsement of Comer.
The governor’s belief that Comer is a “change agent” is part of Morrisey’s strategy in the upcoming primary election. He said it is part of his larger push to replace certain members of the legislature.
“A group of status quo, liberal legislators have opposed our conservative, pro-Trump policies every step of the way,” Morrisey’s post reads. “We must educate the public about the current composition of the Senate and the House and elect more change agents to public office — officials who want to put West Virginia first and who want our state to reach her potential. Many elected legislators claim to be Republicans, but in practice are RINOs— Republicans in name only.”
Meanwhile, Senator Capito says that Deeds has been the right man for the job, and should be re-elected.
“[Vince Deeds is] a fantastic state senator,” she said. “We gotta get Vince back in the state senate. He does great work for our state, he does great work for his community, and we’ve worked on a couple things together locally. I want to see us all send Vince back to the state senate.”
